What is an immediate implantation?

Immediate implantation is the process where a replacement tooth (or teeth) is placed immediately without waiting for the Osseointegration. The whole process is done in a single procedure as opposed to the standard method that has two stages. The standard procedure can take up to one year, while the immediate implantation allows the patients to have their replacement done straight away. This is becoming more popular among the patients who don?脌 want to wait to get their new teeth installed as the implant and the restoration placement are done in one procedure.

You may have also heard the slogan ?姯eeth in a day??or ?姯eeth today???that describes this procedure. Although it seems very appealing, it also has some disadvantages. Remember that every form of dental treatment has some positive and negative aspects, and so does this one. The standard procedure divided in two stages remains the preferred choice for numerous dentists. The reason is that in the shorter procedure, there is no time for the Osseointegration and the implant has no time to heal properly. The Osseointegration gives time for the newly placed implant to integrate into the jawbone and the restoration is not founded strongly. In that case, the risk of implant failure is increased.

What is an implant?

Dental implants are small titanium screws that replace the natural teeth roots. The replacement tooth such as a dental crown or dental bridge is attached to the implant. The implant is installed directly into the upper or lower jaw bone and holds the replacement tooth in place. Dental implants serve as a?replacement for a single tooth or many teeth. They are known for years and their efficiency has been proved. Patients with replacement teeth witness they feel and function exactly the same as natural teeth. Dental implants also look like natural teeth as the facial structure is preserved in it?䏭 integrity. They are the best way to reduce the inconvenience of losing the natural teeth.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

Anyone who is missing one or more of their teeth due to an injury, disease, or decay may be a candidate for dental implants. Is there pain or discomfort involved?

Most patients report that there is very little discomfort involved in the procedure. Branemark System, Replace and Steri-Oss implants are placed in a very gentle manner. Anesthesia is used to eliminate any discomfort at the time of the procedure. How long do implants last?

Our 32 years experience shows that dental bridges supported by implants last over 15 years in 90% of cases. Most patients can expect them to last a life time. The first patient to use this treatment had his Dental Implants installed over 30 years ago and he still is using them today.

How long have implants been done?
The implantation already has a long history in the dental field. In the early 50?䏭, Prof. Brenemark began his research in the field, which ?was a revolution and brought us ?implants as we know them today. Prof. Brenemark installed his first Osseo-integrated ?implant in 1965, after several years of preclinical studies.

TREATMENT TIME:

The surgeon installs the implant and places a special connector (called abutment) over it in order to connect the implant with the crown. Next step is to install the temporary crowns ??all that is done during one visit (one day). After that, an implant stabilization period is required. It lasts from four to six months before the impressions can be taken and the permanent crowns installed.

After the extraction, a healing period was needed for the tooth sockets. It lasted a few weeks before the implantation surgery could be performed. During that time, the bone atrophy was occurring in numerous cases and the bone reconstruction treatment needed to be applied in addition.

The installation of the implant into a freshly opened tooth socket straight after the extraction made the duration of the treatment shorter. It also allowed to limit the number of surgeries to a single one performed along with the extraction.

This solution?䏭 additional advantage is that the patient?䏭 ?bone is preserved from a rapid atrophy happening after the extraction.

Please note that this solution cannot always be applied. The dentist will decide about the possibility of having it performed judging on the condition of the bone after the extraction.

From the technical point of view, such treatment demands a great experience from the surgeon as it is far more difficult from the standard one.

First Visit

(1 day – 3 days, it is recommended to stay for additional 1-2 days not to travel the same time and have some rest, also to be able to have a control visit the day after the procedure)

During the first visit the gum tissue is opened to expose the bone area where the implant will be placed. After the bone has been prepared, the implant is placed and the tissue is sutured.

Sutures removal: After 7 – 14 days after procedure sutures are removed (this can be done by any dentists, there is no need to travel for this procedure)

The Healing Process – Osseointegration

The healing process takes three to six months. This is the amount of time it usually takes the implant to become part of the jaw bone.

Temporary Crowns

Upon patient preferences, temporary crowns/bridges or dentures are installed for the patient’s convenience during healing time.

Second Visit

(5 days or 2 one day visits, the time is required for dental lab to finish prosthetic work)

Attaching the Post

When the gum tissue is ready, implant is uncovered and a special post is attached to it. It is the support for the new crown. After that impressions are taken for a crown.

Placing the crown

After a crown is made it is shaded to match your existing teeth and installed on your implant.

Insufficient Bone Structure

In situations where there is insufficient bone structure, bone grafting may be recommended. We must graft an artificial bone and wait 4-6 months for osseointegration process. After that we proceed with the process described above.

AFTER TREATMENT:

Maintaining good care of the implants will help to assure their durability. You should remember about daily plaque removal, which can be accomplished through brushing and flossing around your restoration. You should visit your dentist at least once a 12-24 months for maintenance appointments.
