What is an implant-supported denture?

As opposed to the traditional denture that lies on the gums, the implant supported denture is attached to and supported by the implants. Compared to the traditional denture, the implant supported denture is more stable and offers more comfort. It is used by patients who lost all of their teeth and can be installed both in upper and lower jaw.

.How does the implant retained denture work?

Two kinds of implant supported dentures exist :

The first being based around a thin metal bar that is connected to 2 ??5 implants. This is called a Bar-Retained Denture. To ensure stability of the denture clips are attached to the denture or the bar or even both to make sure that the denture is properly in place over the bar.

The second consists of metal attachments on implants, and the actual denture itself. These then fit together thanks to sockets. Normally the attachments are ball shaped so they connect to the socket on the denture. This type is called a Ball-Retained Denture.

TREATMENT TIME:

Visit 1 : Implants are placed in a hole which is drilled into the bone. In order to do this, a small incision must be made. ?Once done, the incision is stitched up. ?In some cases bone reconstruction is not required, and the process of healing will only take from 3 to 6 months.

During the time of healing it is possible to place a temporary denture.

At a dental office sutures are removed sometime between 7 and 14 days after the procedure. Travelling abroad is not required for this as it can be done at any dental office.

Visit 2 : A healing cap(collar) is placed on the implant. This is done by exposing the implant by making a small incision. The purpose of this is to ensure the implant heads are kept away from the gum.

Visit 3 : Two weeks later regular abutments are fitted in the place of the collars. In order to create the idea denture, an impression is taken. ?Then finally the denture is placed.

Bone grafting: In some cases there is not enough bone to perform the procedure. In this situation, before the implants can be fitted, bone reconstruction might be required. ?During this procedure, an artificial bone will be installed in the gum, and will need to integrate with the natural one. The integration process is called Osseointegration, and takes 4 to 6 months. After that time, the Implant can be put in place. To get more information, read the chapter about bone grafting.

What are the advantages of the implant retained denture?

Compared to the traditional dentures, the implant supported denture offers more stability as it is not possible for the denture to fall off or become loose. It also makes speaking easier and allows the patient to enjoy any type of food apart from sticky and chewy foods that might damage the construction of the Denture.

How should I take care of my Implant- Supported Denture?

You should remove your implant retained denture every day for cleaning. The gum area must be cleaned too. If you don?™t have permanent crowns and bridges installed, you should also remove your denture for the night.
