The central square of the Old Town is the market in the shape of an irregular quadrilateral. The most distinguished sights there, are the Town Hall and a well built in the seventeenth century. The current market differs slightly from the original design. There are hotels, restaurants, clubs, pubs, museums. One of the most interesting buildings is the old house No. 19. The fragments of brick and stone walls discovered in the basement of the building can be seen in the Underground Tourist Route – they enable to date the beginnings of the building at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
The most magnificent building in the Market, is the Town Hall standing in the corner of the west and north frontage. It was built probably in 1591, by Nicolaus Spytka Lig?za. Rebuilt several times – the current appearance dates from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the basement of the town hall, fragments of old walls and vaults were discovered as well as cellars extending under the S?owackiego Street. One of them houses the Town Hall Gallery.
One of the main attractions in the city is the underground Tourist Route “Rzeszów Cellars”, with a length of 369 meters, held under the houses of the Market Square. It includes 25 cellars and 15 corridors, reaching 10 meters into the ground, which have been given names related to their function and the history of the city. You can see the remains of the medieval walls (eg the tenement No. 19) and centuries-old bricks, traces of fire, the remains of iron bars and hinges, hidden passages. The lower parts were used for storing a variety of goods, and the cellars posed shelter for the inhabitants of the castle during invasions.
The Bernardine monastery complex with the Church of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary were built in the first half of the seventeenth century. It was originally a wooden church, built in 1536, in the sanctuary there are tombs of the Lig?za family.
